🍓 We Pick the Berries, You Reap the Benefits🍓
There’s something quietly powerful happening across Scotland’s fields and farm shops this summer: a celebration of our nation’s soft fruit industry. The ‘Berries of Scotland’ campaign by Scotland Food & Drink is putting a national spotlight on the people, places, and produce that make Scottish berries truly world-class—and we at East Scryne Fruit Farm shop and Tearoom are proud to be part of it.
Scotland has a rich berry-growing heritage, stretching back more than a century to Blairgowrie in the early 1900s. Over time, regions like Angus, Fife, and Perthshire have become synonymous with sweet, sun-ripened strawberries and raspberries. Today, you’ll find berry growers across the country—from the Highlands to the Borders—all contributing to a vibrant, resilient industry that nourishes both communities and the land – and the ‘Berries of Scotland’ campaign have created a wonderful map and information resource to highlight exactly what berry growers across Scotland are doing and where to find them.

What sets Scottish berries apart isn’t just where they’re grown—it’s how they’re grown. Thanks to our cool climate, long daylight hours, and innovative farming methods, Scotland produces fruit with a depth of flavour that’s hard to match. As the campaign highlights, around 70% of our soft fruit is now grown under cover in polytunnels or glasshouses, helping protect crops from the elements while extending the growing season. And in a beautiful display of harmony with nature, many farms—including ours—use bees for pollination, ensuring sustainable, high-quality yields.
At East Scryne, this mission feels deeply personal. For generations, our family has nurtured strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries in the heart of Angus—one of Scotland’s most renowned growing areas. To chime with the ‘Berries of Scotland’ campaign, we’re excited to share a short video featuring Jim Porter, who explains why Angus berries are so famously sweet. (Spoiler: it’s all about that perfect mix of soil, sea air, and summer light!)
But the message goes beyond farming practices—it’s about food, health, and heritage. Scottish berries are a delicious way to meet your 5-a-day, rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fibre, and naturally low in fat and salt. They’re also endlessly versatile: perfect on their own, stirred into porridge, layered into pavlovas, or baked into tarts. Through this campaign, Scotland Food & Drink is inviting us all to reconnect with our local produce and appreciate the people behind it.

Being part of this campaign connects us to something bigger than ourselves. It’s not just about East Scryne—it’s about being part of a national movement that champions local food, supports rural communities, and celebrates what Scotland grows best.
So whether you’re eating in our tearoom or simply enjoying a punnet of strawberries with cream at home—we invite you to savour the season and share in the pride. Use #BerriesOfScotland to join the celebration—and next time you stop by our farm shop or tearoom, know you’re tasting a little slice of Scotland’s sweet success
