Working with Transition Dundee to Fight Food Waste & Support the Local Community

At East Scryne Fruit, sustainability is at the heart of what we do, which is why supporting Transition Dundee’s Gleaning Project felt like a natural step. This year, we were thrilled to donate surplus blueberries from our harvest to support their efforts in reducing food waste and providing fresh produce to local communities.

What is Gleaning?

Gleaning is traditionally done to prevent perfectly good produce from going to waste. Often, crops might be left in the fields because they don’t meet cosmetic standards or because market demand has shifted unexpectedly. However, for us at East Scryne Fruit, the reason is a bit more specific. As our blueberry season winds down, the tail end of the crop becomes less economically viable to harvest. That’s where the Gleaning Project comes in—ensuring that even the final pickings of our harvest still go to good use and benefit our local community.

Our blueberries, for example, made their way to fantastic initiatives like the West End Community Fridge and the Dundee Community Food Network. From there, they’re shared with larders, foodbanks, and community cafes, where they provide healthy, much-needed food to people across the area.

Why We Support This Initiative

For a farm, having surplus fruit is part and parcel of the growing season. Rather than seeing food wasted at the end of the season, when it is not commercially viable to pick the remainder of the crop, working with Transition Dundee means we know our produce is making a difference. Knowing our berries are being distributed around Dundee adds value to our work and gives us a sense of community impact.

The Impact of Transition Dundee

Transition Dundee does incredible work beyond gleaning. Their projects tackle climate change and promote sustainability in multiple ways, and the Gleaning Project is a prime example. By gathering surplus produce and connecting it to places like the West End Community Fridge, they ensure nutritious food reaches those who need it most while reducing emissions from unnecessary waste. They’re also mindful of keeping their food distribution local, which makes a positive impact on transport emissions and strengthens connections between growers and the community.

Why Gleaning Matters

By taking part in this project, we’re contributing to a more sustainable and compassionate food system right here in Tayside. It’s rewarding to know that our blueberries, grown with so much care, are now a part of this bigger effort to reduce waste and improve food security.

We’re proud to work with Transition Dundee and are inspired by their vision of a more sustainable, healthier city.
